Quiz · 5 min
How well do you really know crypto?
Twelve questions from four fields: basics, chain, security, and law and tax. After every answer you are told straight away why it is right. At the end you see your score, your strengths in each field and two reading tips for whatever is still missing.
Question 1 of 12 · Basics
How many Bitcoin can there ever be at most?
Your two reading tips
Twelve questions are a sample, not proof of expertise. Every figure in the explanations is backed by a source below the tool.
Note: The quiz tests facts and is neither investment advice nor tax advice. The tax questions follow German law. The source for every figure sits in the table below the tool.
How the tool counts
Twelve questions, four topic fields with three questions each: basics, chain, security, and law and tax. Every right answer is worth exactly one point, a wrong one takes nothing away, and there is no time limit. The total gives you the level: zero to five points is Beginner, six to nine points Intermediate, ten to twelve points Expert. The four bars in the result show how many of the three questions per field you got right. From the two weakest fields the tool picks the reading tips. The only thing saved is your last score, and it is saved in the memory of your own browser. Nothing goes to a server, there is no sign-up, no analysis across several people and no leaderboard.
The figures behind the answers
Every explanation in the quiz has a source: the wording of the law, the wording of the regulation, the whitepaper, the technical standard or the documentation of the project in question. The table below matches each topic field to its source so that you can read every statement for yourself.
| Topic field | Statement in the quiz | Source |
|---|---|---|
| Basics | At most just under 21 million Bitcoin, one Bitcoin holds 100,000,000 satoshi, whitepaper of 31 October 2008 | Whitepaper and bitcoin.org |
| Chain | One block every ten minutes on average, difficulty readjusted every 2,016 blocks, reward halved every 210,000 blocks | Bitcoin Wiki, Controlled supply |
| Chain | Ethereum on Proof of Stake since 15 September 2022, about 99.95 per cent less electricity | ethereum.org on the Merge |
| Security | Seed phrase of 12 to 24 words, generated from 128 to 256 bits of randomness | BIP 39 |
| Law and tax | German holding period of one year, German threshold below 1,000 euro in the calendar year | Section 23 of the German Income Tax Act, plus the circular of the German Federal Ministry of Finance of 6 March 2025 |
| Law and tax | In force since 30 December 2024, titles III and IV since 30 June 2024 | Regulation (EU) 2023/1114, article 149 |
Two answers deserve a footnote. First the 21 million: the arithmetic limit is 20,999,999.9769 Bitcoin, because the reward is paid out in whole satoshi and rounded down along the way. That is why the quiz says "just under 21 million". Second the 1,000 euro under section 23 (3) sentence 5 of the German Income Tax Act: that is a threshold, not an allowance. If your total gain from private disposals in the calendar year reaches 1,000 euro or more, the full amount is taxable, not only the part above the line. Up to and including 2023 the line sat at 600 euro. These tax rules apply in Germany, and readers elsewhere are covered by their own national rules.
Where the quiz stops
Twelve questions with four answers each are a sample. Someone who guesses gets three answers right on average, so a low score says little about real gaps and a high one says little about practice. The quiz tests facts, not skill: whether you keep a seed phrase safe, judge a transaction fee properly or spot an attempted fraud cannot be measured with four answer cards. The legal questions are deliberately broad as well. They repeat the wording of the law and replace no advice on an individual case, for example once staking, lending, swaps between crypto-assets or a change of residence come into play. And figures age: tax thresholds move with every annual German tax act, and the European regulation is being filled in by technical standards. The sources above therefore matter more than the result.
Frequently asked questions
How many points count as a good result?
Six points separate guessing from knowing, because with four answer cards pure guesswork hits three of twelve questions on average. From ten points you know the figures that come up in almost every conversation about Bitcoin. More telling than the total are the four bars: they show which field is worth reading up on.
Why does the quiz say "just under 21 million" rather than exactly 21 million?
The reward per block is paid out in whole satoshi and rounded down at every halving. That keeps the arithmetic limit at 20,999,999.9769 Bitcoin, a little below the round number. In practice it is never quite reached anyway, because lost keys freeze holdings for good.
Does the German one year holding period still apply if I stake the coins?
Yes, in Germany it does. The circular of the German Federal Ministry of Finance of 6 March 2025 gives the point its own section titled "no extension of the disposal period to ten years". For currency and payment tokens it therefore stays at one year, even after staking or lending. The running income is taxed separately. This is not tax advice, and other countries set their own rules.
Are my answers stored anywhere?
No. The quiz runs entirely in your browser. The only thing saved is the last score, in the local storage of your device, so that "last time" can appear on your next visit. Clear your browser data and that entry is gone too.
Can I take the quiz again?
Yes. The "play again" button in the result resets points, bars and progress and starts at question one. The order of the questions stays the same, so you can go straight back to the answers you were unsure about.
